Way of life

The social unit in Benasque Valley is the home, each house has a different name according to the surname of the people who live there.

In days gone by, the houses could be good, average or small, with the architectural differences being more than obvious. The poorer houses had a patio, animal pens—sometimes inside, the potato store, the tool shed, chicken run and rabbit pen, a kitchen, pantry and the bedrooms. All the rooms were small.

The more prosperous houses were much larger, with coats of arms engraved over the doors, towers were built, and there were large, lavishly decorated living rooms, and quarters for the servants.
