Surrounded by the greatest concentration of peaks beyond 3,000 meters in all the Pyrenees, Benasque Valley owns a large geological richness with more than 13 glaciers, 95 lakes and many waterfalls that, together with the multiple vegetable and animal species, led to the creation of Posets-Maladeta Nature Park in 1994.

Mountains and glaciers

Surrounded by the greatest concentration of peaks beyond 3,000 meters in all the Pyrenees, among which stand out Aneto with 3,404 meters high in the north; Posets with 3,375 meters and Perdiguero with 3,221 meters in the south; and the massifs of Turbón with 2,492 meters and Cotiella with 2,912 meters. The valley has also many rivers, lakes and forests that create a great assortment of endless landscapes and a large number of vegetable and animal species that led to the creation of Posets-Maladeta Nature Park in 1994 aiming at protecting its nature values, the flora, the fauna and the geomorphologic formations.

The Posets-Maladeta Nature Park location, at an altitude between 1,500 and 3,404 meters high, permits the existence of a great biological diversity that can be extended to the rest of the valley, with some endemic or endangered species. The park also covers several municipalities such as Benasque, Gistaín, Montanuy, Sahún and San Juan de Plan, with a total surface of 33,267 hectares.

Regarding natural monuments, the park has thirteen glaciers with almost 350 ha in the massifs of Posets, Perdiguero and Maladeta. Spread out through the entire valley, there are numerous glacial-origin lakes (Cregüeña, Batisielles, etc.) of different sizes and characteristics, and multiple waterfalls. The glacial modelling formations, such as the moraines, the ‘ibones’ (lakes) and other important karstic phenomenon are worthwhile elements. In terms of species, the park also has some endemic and endangered flora and fauna species common in high mountain bioclimatic ground.

The park is home for more than 100 animal species (mammals and birds) and for thirty or so vegetable species of great biological interest. The visitors centre is located in Benasque and contains a permanent exhibition of the four large environments that exist in the park: rock, ice and snow; pastures and meadows; high mountain forests and inhabited valleys. In addition, there is an audiovisual room of the park.

The best way for admiring all the Posets-Maladeta Nature Park summits, from Aneto to Posets, is by taking a chairlift located in Ampriu sector, a road-accessible area near Cerler village. Regarding sports and activities, Benasque Valley offers a wide range of possibilities.

This area is a privileged natural setting for adventure sports; the downhill skiing and cross-country skiing resorts in winter or the endless mountains in summer, together with other facilities aim for more restful activities, make this Pyrenees neck of the woods a pleasure worth visiting.
