Two different but well integrated urban landscapes stand out inside Benasque town. On the one hand, the most traditional building structures can be found clustered close to the church, such as Condes de Ribargorza Palace or Casa Juste with its typical fortified tower. On the other hand, the modern building structures made of stone and bricks are located in the outskirts. However, Benasque municipality covers the population hubs of Cerler and Anciles, two gems worth visiting.
Anciles. In a summary of the best traditional architecture of the region, this extraordinary urban ensemble should not be left apart. The most distinguished is the magnificent noble houses dating back to the 16th and the 17th centuries, such as Casa Suprián, Casa Sebastián, Casa Sort, Casa Barrau, Casa Escuey… In fact, the name of these houses still works to recognize each one of the family members that live on them.
If you want to be amazed discovering a hidden treasure of the medieval religious architecture, you only have to go for a short walk through the nearby Casa Conques.
Beside it, you will find a small Lombard style chapel with a pronounced roof and a raw of blind arches in the apse.
Cerler. Before arriving to Cerler, do not miss the opportunity of taking a rest in the viewpoint located halfway, next to the road. From there, you will have an exceptional panoramic view: looking to the South, forests and fields will reveal the very ancient conjunction between human and nature throughout this land. Towards the North, the valley becomes rough and defiant due to the sharp summits and modelling shapes resulted from glaciers and mountain torrents activity. When in Cerler/Sarllé, go deep into the old town. It is a great surprise, isn’t it? The emanating silence and peace of the ancient and well-preserved houses close to the church are intensely in contrast with the bustle and modernity of the latest residential area and the Cerler ski resort (Aramon group).
It is worth mentioning the ancient mining located close to the town and from which pyrite was removed during the ‘30s and ‘40s. During the highest production period, the trader company Industria Química de Zaragoza went as far as to use the remains of this mineral to obtain copper and gold.
